So i have some thoughts, based on one particular class i have (some of you reading may know this class very well :D), about some things that are done in a classroom. In this class we learn about physiology and how important it is in our life. Try this for instance. Stand up. Yes, right now. Look up at the ceiling and put a huge goofy smile on your face. Do you feel like you could ever feel sad standing like that? I highly doubt it. Regardless whether it completely changes your mood or not (that is ultimately YOUR choice) you would for an instant you just have to giggle. So with that said in this class we never start without walking into music blaring and dancing. My teacher (:D) believes starting a class like that we get in the right frame of mind to learn. Also during the class if he sees anyone slipping into sleep or boredom we're up and dancing, giving backrubs, and high fives left and right! Now i LOVE this, but everytime i somewhat mention this to my teachers in my education classes i always seem to get the same reaction "well, that's an interesting idea but....". What do you think? How would you feel walking into your high school math class with music blaring and everyone dancing for the first 10 minutes? Would it cause too much chaos? Yes, in our system today i think it probably is very unconventional. We have a set schedule and we need to get this, this, and that done. How do we have time for wasting 10 minutes of a each class, maybe more? Seeing the benefits of this class i almost wonder how do you not?
On another note i have another question. How would you go about teaching something like algebra so it wasn't just lecturing and more geared towards learning not only about math, but more importantly some sort of life lesson. I feel i could incorporate that into almost any other course, but MATH? Help me out here. I have two years left to contemplate this but it is quite the task so i need all the help i can get! If i can teach my math classes and have my students leaving not only learning something about math BUT something about themselves, who they are, and what they have to offer to the world pertaining to math AND not pertaining to math i believe i could then feel i've done my job "right".
Thanks again for the comments! I LOVE your feedback! If something doesn't make sense please ask! Because these are my thought i type it very quickly as if i were having a conversation with someone and i KNOW lots of times speaking i don't make sense! :D
HAVE A FANTASTIC LAZY, RELAXFUL SUNDAY AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR ENDEVOURS FOR TOMORROW!

I kind of like the music/dancing entrance idea for starting class, maybe just shorten it to about 3 minutes so you can get everything else accomplished. As for making math more interesting? Good luck with that one!!
ReplyDeleteHa, my dad deals every day with trying to make more math interesting...I've never seen him in action but he does some silly things. One that I can remember off the top of my head is the "Kill the fractions" song that he sings to encourage people to simplify numbers. Now, it is going to play in my head all day.
